Vitamin A And Acne Treatment

Vitamins play a very important role in our daily life and deficiency of essential vitamins can cause numerous diseases from Parkinson’s to heart problems. While a number of vitamins are essential for your skin, Vitamin A and acne have a very close relationship. This article discusses how lack of vitamin A can lead to acne lesions and what precautions are necessary while using vitamin A for acne treatment.

According to published scholarly researches, vitamin A has the potential to control or affect the various stages that lead to the development of acne. Firstly, inappropriate discarding of skin cells occurs during acne. These skin cells can clutter and block the pores, which eventually results in oil (sebum) getting trapped inside and facilitating development of acne. Vitamin A has the ability to enhance removal of these skin cells so they won’t get cluttered around the pores.

Another published research found that lack of vitamin A would also result in inflammation of acne. In addition to this, it would worsen the inflammation in case it already exists. This is due to the close relation between acne and vitamin A present in blood cells. In short, this essential vitamin makes the skin stronger, prevents development of acne, and helps reduce inflammation in worst cases. Accutane is a common prescription treatment given for acne cure and it primarily consists of vitamin A.

But it’s not all good news with vitamin A. It has been found that excessive consumption of Accutane can prove to be harmful for your skin at the end of the day. For example, several individuals who used this

treatment have given accounts of skin irritation, redness and dryness. To be on the safe side, it is not recommended to use benzoyl peroxide creams while you are on prescription medicines based on vitamin A, because acne creams consisting of benzoyl peroxide also have the tendency to cause dryness. So a combination of both these treatments results in a very high risk of skin dryness. In addition to this, you should not use vitamin A medications during pregnancy.

Rather than getting acne and worrying about treatment later, it is always the best thing to prevent it in the first place. To be safe, you can consume a diet rich in vitamin A like eggs, milk and liver. And if you feel you are short of vitamins, you can take a good quality multivitamin supplement. But always consult a doctor before consuming large doses of vitamin A for acne treatment.
